Meet Your Instructor

Elisa DeVargas, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist based in Albuquerque, NM, where she recently opened a private practice. She specializes in Spanish-language services, trauma-focused therapy, and child and adolescent mental health. Her clinical interests include child development, parent training, trauma-informed care, and family therapy. Her research focuses on substance abuse prevention, cultural adaptation of evidence- based practices, bilingual psychologist training, and Latinx mental health. Dr. DeVargas is dedicated to culturally sensitive care and has a long-standing commitment to improving access for underserved communities. She is actively involved with the National Latinx Psychological Association. Dr. DeVargas has led efforts to improve bilingual training for doctoral psychology students and founded a national Spanish-language consultation group for bilingual mental health providers. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon and completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She later completed an APA-accredited postdoctoral fellowship through the Southwest Consortium at a major medical center in Albuquerque, following specialized training in Spanish for mental health in Peru.
